"Great looking watch! - Chrono a bit limited" 2010-01-05

I will "third" the motion that this watch looks much better in real life than it does in the photos. Not sure where Amazon got it's photos from, but there are better stock photos out there.

To the complainers about slow "2nd timezone" setting: I don't think the feature is really meant for one to say "oh, I wonder what time it is in India", and switch to L-TM mode. I think it is for when you travel. You can set the destination timezone as the L-TM time, and then switch to it easily when you get there, and switch easily back when you get home. And it takes around 2 minutes at most to set, possibly 2.5 for worst case scenario. I timed it, and to switch ahead 12 hours it took 1 minute 15 seconds.

Where this slowness *does* get annoying, at least for me, is when setting the alarm time. I've had another Citizen with the same movement, and it was the same way. It's just an annoyance that you have to get used to with this watch movement.

Some Pros not mentioned yet:

* Tachymeter - Yeah! More watches should have these

* In chronograph mode, the large second hand becomes the second hand for the chrono

* Crystal may not be sapphire but it does have a hard sound when tapped with fingernail

* Tiny reflective surfaces around the hour markers and subdials give it a slight silvery "bling" look

Some Cons not mentioned:

* Can't switch away from chrono mode while timing or chrono will reset! - Worst feature by far

* Timer bezel clicks in whole minute increments instead of much preferred 1/2 minute.

* No indication of charge level until it gets down to the danger point.

* Requires rigorous reset and 0-calibration of the hands if charge ever completely runs out.

That last one is standard for all computer-controlled watches, and not a problem at all for me, but could be for some people, especially those prone to losing their manuals. :') Not only do the hands have to be set back to their zero points, but the date has to be set back to 1. Then you can begin setting the watch to the current date & time. The previous posters didn't mention this crucial step to using the watch. Save your manual. It's naive to think that your watch will never run out of juice!

Now here's a mystery for those who own the watch: What is that red "warning" indicator just past the "5" position? It is not mentioned in the manual. The manual talks of "insufficient charge warning" indication, but that is the "charge" indicator between the 3 and the 4. It progresses from there to "stop" (just past the 4) when power depletes to critical, and from there to "set" (just before the 5) after being exposed to enough light to set the watch. The manual calls this the "time setting warning indication", and means you need to set the date & time. So what is "warning" for? My watch came stopped, with the second hand pointing to "warning". A little sunlight and I was able to do the all-clear, calibrate, and set. Just wondering what it was warning me about.

I'm going to reiterate what one poster said about removing links in the band. There are tiny cylindrical sleeves - one per link - that slide into one side of a link and create the friction that holds the pin in place. If you don't have that in place, the pin won't stay. Also, be sure to shove the pins back in, in the opposite direction that you took them out. (You take them out in the direction of the arrow.)

I like the fact that the upper-right subdial shows both minutes *and* 1/20 seconds in chrono mode. Efficient use of space. Too bad the 24 hour dial doesn't switch to 24 hours of chronograph timing. This *is* a computer-controlled watch, isn't it? The chrono should maintain its value, between modes, and use the 24 hour dial to time up to 24 hours. Are you listening, Citizen? :')

All in all, I'd recommend it if you can live with the limited chrono and the slow time adjustment. (6.25 seconds to move the time ahead 1 hour). If you can't live with it, Citizen have other Eco-drive watches that do not have that limitation. Computer-controlled watches without a second hand should not have that limitation.

I purchased this watch from other site not Amazon - so my reviews are specific to the watch:

PROS:

1) Excellent looking watch - looks way better than the pic - will upload some nice pics later. It very easily catches attention and the looks. It looks very nice at night in room light too.

2) Strap is light weight - and the watch sits nicely on your wrist.

3) Set the watch once and forget it. I set the time, year, month and date. I then set the local time to match DST and I will now forget about time setting for ever. Perpetual calendar will take care of it. I will change the default to local time for DST.

4) For some time in dark the hands are very luminous.

5) Displays the 24 hour time which tells you if its AM /PM

6) Decent chronograph up to an hour.

7) 5 year warranty - this watch has to be really good looking at the confidence, Citizen has in it.

CONS:

1) Very Slow time switch over to local time - If its a country (like India) where there's a difference of a day then the hands will move hour by hour to match that time. This goes on for ever. This functionality is best suitable for time difference of a couple of hours and not a day.

2) yes - bezel moves easily.

3) I will try to come over the in-ability of setting local time of odd hours like India time - by changing the time first to match the India time and then setting India time in local time and then switching back and changing the time - I doubt it will work. but frankly speaking I don't use much of this dual time.

4) No split time in chronograph

5) No sapphire crystal at this price range

BUT: For those who don't use dual time of odd hours I think its a very good time piece. Like a collectible in this price range. Its a good sports/dress watch which does not need a battery. I fixed the links myself its easy. be careful of the inner rings in the links - they are small and you need to put them back IN when changing links.

My 4 stars are because of all the pros. I am planning to use local time for DST so it still works very fast.

Pros(Without all of these I would have given it a rating of 1 star):

1. Looks awesome. Much better in real life than in photos.

2. Has an alarm and perpetual calendar.

3. Luminous hands work really well in the dark well into the night

4. Accurate

5. Runs for a loooong time on a single charge.

6. Easy to set.

Cons:

1. Dual-time functionality is useless because the hands take forever to show time once you select L-TM(Local time) or TME(Primary time). You can go have coffee with your girl, finish all your chores for the day, finish cooking and take a small snooze before it shows you the second time.

2. Assuming you still want to use the Dual-time functionality, secondary time can only be set by a MINIMUM OF 1HR INCREMENTS/DECREMENTS RELATIVE TO YOUR PRIMARY TIME. Ex: IST - Indian Standard Time is UTC + 5hrs 30mins. So if you live in USA you just cant set the secondary time to India because US Time Zones are in 1hr Increments. There are plenty of countries which set their time by half hour increments from UTC. You can never set these as your secondary time. This is a critical design flaw of the watch.

3. The crown moves very easily. I have often caught the hands spinning wildly because the crown brushed against my clothes and changed the mode to Local Time or Chronograph.

4. Rotating bezel moves way too easily. I can never keep the 60 aligned with the 12hr marker. It is not important to me but for some it matters.

Watch is nice and light. Band does not look like "Pleather." Looks great. Only complaint is that when you use the chronograph function the buttons can be hit by your hand/wrist and prematurely deactivate the function. All three buttons do not screw/lock. I never use the function, so it doesn't really bother me. I'm very happy with it, but feel like it could be about $20-30 cheaper.

Its a great looking watch. I now own about ten watches, this is the least expensive. For a person who rotates through a collection, its hard to get the watch fully charged when buying in winter. None-the-less, Eco drives are great. I also have a Mickey.

The band on the watch may be too short of you have a larger wrist. I'm at 7.25" and very little is left of the band.

Right from the start this watch is rocking the Eco-Drive technology underneath. That means no more batteries are needed and everything is powered by light. Score one for Citizen. I was looking for a watch that was a bit toned down from a dual tone gold watch I purchased earlier on amazon. I wanted something more casual that I can wear out on a night out on the town yet had enough flash and class to be paired with a Shirt and Tie or a suit for work. This watch fit the bill.

The Highly polished silver bezel with it's dark black face, and striking mirror shine Hour Markers and Yellow Chronograph Hands makes a nice classy statement. It is easy to read the actual time since the hour and minute hands are made thicker and will also illuminate in the dark. The spacing of the watch band holes is fairly granular meaning they are many holes separated only slightly so you should be able to find the hole that fits you perfectly (that's what she said). It's not a very heavy watch, but then again it has a leather strap instead of metal, however the watch has enough heft to it so you know it's stainless steel and not made of plastic. It is also water resistant up to 100 meters so you don't have to worry about getting rained on or getting pushed into a pool by your less than mature drinking buddies. The Crowns are not a screw in type so you can press it immediately. What's also nice is 24 hour dial on it so you can not only tell night from day but it also helps you set the calendar date correctly so it rolls over at midnight

I'm not sure how I feel about the black watch band with the white stitching. The Band itself is what prevented this watch from getting the full five stars. It's a bit stiff and feels a bit like pleather (plasticky leather). The insides of the watch band feels more like genuine leather but the outside is a cheap plastic feeling material. Perhaps it will age better. Also the white stitching they could've done without but it does give the watch a unique style to it. The white stitching is not a distraction that you would feel uncomfortable pairing it up with a shirt and tie. Also the watch band doesn't rotate flat. Based on how it's attached to the watch it's in a permanent curved setting so you will not be able to place this watch flat on it's back. This is going to cause the scratches that normally appear on the back on the watch to know appear on the side of the bezel or crown if you are not careful when placing the watch on surfaces that can scratch it.

Overall great watch, I have found quite the keeper watch that I can use as my daily watch and not have to worry if it will pair right with what I'm wearing. I'm also uploading a ton of photos unto amazon since it seems actual photos of this watch doesn't seem to exist on the internet, only the professional ones.

3/11/2009 Update: it seems my Watch runs fast about 3 minutes/month or about 6 seconds a day. Not too bad

5/8/2009 update: The watch seems to run better now. After 2 months from my last update my watch is only off 2 seconds now after 2 months.

Like other's have said, this is NOT an eco-drive watch!!!

I've owned diver's watch and chronographs for years--mostly Seiko, Citizen, Bulova, etc. This watch looks great, works great, and for under $200 is a great value. My only complaint so far would be that the blue face is much more subdued in color--I was hoping for a brighter, more vibrant blue. Still, I really like the watch, and it's nearly impossible to find a Chronograph that displays the DAY and date, a feature I really like!!

This is a brand new model from Citizen and it is a beautiful watch. It has many of the amazing features as other top Citizen Eco Drive watches. Specifically the Perpetual Calendar, Alarm, Chronograph, Dual Time, and Slide Rule. In this review, I will comment on each feature as well as the overall quality and aesthetics of the watch.

I was looking for a large faced aviator watch and saw many models from Citizen and Seiko. This model has a large 48mm diameter face which really catches the eye. The case thickness at 12mm is also not too thick, which was one of my concerns with other large faces watches. It has 4 separate knobs/buttons which have a low profile but are smooth and well finished. The buttons on the right do not dig into your hand like other watches with large knobs. The grooved ring around the face of the watch really adds a lot of BLING that is not overwhelming and very classy.

The watch has an good weight to it so you better like heavy watches. It screams quality whenever you look at it closely and press the buttons. The perpetual calendar ensures that you never need to change the date for different months and leap years. The dual time function allows you to display the time in another time zone that is in 1-hour increments. Unfortunately, it will not display time zones in 30-min increments, so if your second time zone is 4.5 hours behind your main time zone then the watch would not be able to display the exact time in the second time zone. You have to either set it at 4 hours or 5 hours apart from the first time zone.

The alarm and chronograph are selected by rotated the crown to select the desired function. The Alarm rings for 15 seconds and is audible if the watch is near to you. The chronograph can measure time up to 59 minutes and 59 seconds, with an accuracy of 1/20 of a second.

The slide rule allows you to do calculations such as ratios, multiplication, division, and percentages. You can also convert from metric to imperial units by simply moving the dial on the left to the desired position. You will have to download a manual to learn the slide rule. Even if you don't want to use it, you will find that the slide rule makes the watch look refined and technical. I supposed the sliderule could have been implemented as a rotating bezel as on other watches, but this model uses a rotating knob. This adds an extra knob to the watch but ensures that the sliderule is under the glass and not exposed. I think this is more classe that having sliderules, tachymeters, etc. that are exposed on the outer ring of the watch as rotating bezels.

Two things made me return this beautiful watch:

1. The alarm volume is so low as to be inaudible. If there was ANY background noise I couldn't hear it.

2. Setting the alarm time means slowly and laboriously twisting the stem the old-fashioned way - the buttons serve no function in setting the alarm.

If you're a light sleeper and want your alarm to go off at the same time every day, this watch could work for you, but it didn't work for me.

Watch looks classy even with the rubber wristband (which sometimes makes a watch look cheap). The main toggle buttons on the right are extremely sensitive, making it somewhat difficult to program and really use all the features of the watch. Would have been slightly resentful of this fact if I wouldn't have gotten a last minute deal on the item which dropped the price another $60 or so. Overall it made my husband happy and that's all that matters!

This watch is designed just the way I like it. Simple and elegant, yet it smacks of quality. This watch is not small. It's big, bold, and easy to read. Using stainless steel and a thick front crystal, this watch is not lightweight either and you will feel its weight as you wear it. With that said, this watch is not "big and gaudy", nor is it too heavy. I consider it to be a "standard size aviator style watch" and I think it's just the right size, weight, and look. Unlike many black-face watches, there are no red or yellow highlights on this watch which makes it a little more dressy and less sporty than similar watches. The numbers and date window and inner dials are easy enough to read. There is a very handy stopwatch feature which is simple to use and fun to play with. The outer rotating bezel requires strong fingers to rotate it and it only rotates in one direction which makes it very unlikely to get bumped around. The leather strap is thick enough and wide enough to handle the weight. I much prefer leather to metal for compfort reasons.

Cons: The second hand doesn't move. Instead, the second hand only rotates when using the stopwatch feature. Citizen opted to use one of the inner dials to indicate the seconds for the current time. This is a minor nit-pick and it just takes some getting used to. When you first look at the watch, you are inclined to think it is not running (when it is). I wish this watch would indicate the day of the week.

I can't comment on the eco-drive feature, but it seems like a good idea. If this watch runs for more than two years without a battery change, then I will be happy. The owner's manual says this watch will run in complete darkness for 6 months before the batteries fail and then you can simply rechange the watch with exposure to artifical or natural light. Sounds great on paper.

I just received this watch and I will agree with the previous reviewer that it takes a few minutes to set up, but the instructions are clear and once it's done, it's easy to maintain.

If any gripe at all, the rubber strap is too large (and I have a large wrist) and there really aren't any adjustments you can make to it other than physically cut it down...but it appears the strap is designed just for that.

I asked for this watch for Christmas and got it. Wore it dead the first day (light charges it, so I figured wearing it on a sunny day would be as good a way as any to charge it up), and it has been a champ since. It's a joy knowing the battery will practically never have to be replaced.

I like the stopwatch function. It works with the large red second hand and the top left dial for minutes. It's a cheap thrill to watch the red hand swoosh around the face when you reset the timer.

Definitely a manly watch, with the bezeled metal and inset dials, but not clunky and heavy with a metal band. The band is more nylon packcloth than canvas, as it says, but that is a very fine point. Most people probably wouldn't care about the difference.

The luminous 12, 3, 6 and 9, and bars for other hours are very bright for 4+ hours after I've left work each night.

I've had the watch wet, but not enough to matter. It's promised to be waterproof to deeper than I'd be able to recover.

For the money, you can't beat the features and quality of this watch. Home run.

This watch is great! Its light, its easy to set up and it gets lots of second looks. The downside is the magnified date lense; it extends past the watch crystal and sometimes gets caught on stuff as it moves. The conern is that it might crack sometime. Other than that it is strongly encouraged for anyone who wants to combine a work and dive watch.

I bought this watch for my husband - a dive shop owner and instructor - in 2004 to replace his previous Citizen Aqualand (which he had for 5 years before that!)

The watch performs beautifully even after years of 2-tank salt water diving, teaching sessions in pools etc. He has never had any problems with his watch whatsoever, and it still looks great, whether he's wearing it in the water, or to a meeting.

If he ever had a problem with the one he's got, he assures me that the next thing he'll do is go right back out and buy another...

Problems with the watch as reported are probably due to improper sizing, or not ensuring the knob is screwed in properly before entering the water...

Worth every penny!

I owned this watch for 11 months before I took it out for a first dive. Before that I really liked it. It is light enough, robust, kind of looks classy, and I really like the ecodrive.

First dive I took it out on it performed very well. We were under for 55 minutes at max depth of 55 feet/18 meters. The watch read great, even during the safety stop at 15 feet it was responsive and read well. After the dive it remembered max depth for record keeping purposes, which I really liked.

About two hours after the dive, the trouble started. When rinsing it with fresh water, I noticed condensation on the inside. Within a day I realized it was dying a slow death. The moisture on the inside must have killed the eco-drive and maybe drained its battery. The power drained, the watch slowed down, and after 5 days, it was all over.

I am very disappointed, because this is not a cheap watch, and I could also have bought a $200 SUUNTO computer that would not have given me this trouble.

The next step is to test Citizen's warranty, and see if they fix it for free, and then if it will work as a true dive watch. I am not getting my hopes up.

Update June 13 2009: Citizen repaired the watch without charge under warranty. I have a dive trip coming up in July and will test again then.

Update July 30 2009: took the watch out for 4 dives, deepest was 70 feet. It performed very well and I enjoyed to dive with it very much. In addition, I took it out snorkeling and skin diving to maximum 30 feet and it responded very well. With the watch repaired for free under comprehensive warranty, I raise it to 4 out of 5 stars.

I'm a diver, and my wife wanted to buy me a watch to replace my cheapo watch. I wanted a big geeky dive watch, my wife wanted a nice watch that would look good with a suit. We both liked this watch.

In the past, I've never had a watch last more than a year. I'd buy watches that claimed to be waterproof to 300 meters, and the first time I'd dive with them would usually be the last. Sometimes it would only take a swimming pool to kill them.

All that changed when I got this watch. I've had it for almost 4 years now, and it just keeps going.

I dive with a dive team. We dive at least once per month. I've dove in water from 34 degrees up to 82 degress, and depths to at least 75 ft. In the last 4 years, this watch has gone with me on every dive. I remember one cold water dive where my dive computer's lcd screen went blank from the extreme cold. My Citizen watch kept going without a hiccup.

Our team does swiftwater rescues also. This training involves swiming down whitewater rapids and bouncing our bodies off rocks for fun. This watch stands up to that abuse too.

I can't imagine anyone questioning it's waterproffness. It's an AQUALAND! They are DIVE WATCHES! Not fancy watches that are supposed to look like dive watches.

If you want a fancy watch that does everything, this may not be the watch for you. But if you want a watch to tell the time, the depth, how long you've been in the water, what the max depth of your last dive was and the date, this watch fills the bill and looks good on your wrist doing it.

Pluses:

The glow-in-the-dark spots make it easy to read the time in low light.

The titanium is hypo-alergenic. Most stainless watches make me break out. This one doesn't

It's lighter than it looks (it's the titanium)

There's a section of the watch band that slides out to accomodate a diver with a wetsuit. Neat idea.

Two hours of light (doesn't even have to be sunlight) runs the watch for a month.

The band is comfortable, and stiff enough that it stays put. It doesn't rotate around your wrist like some of the other watches I've owned.

The only minus I'd mention is that the face is a little busy, which can make reading the time a challenge at certain times. I've gotten used to it.

If the link pin on your band fell out, somebody screwed up when they sized it. There are little rings inside the links that capture the pin. If you aren't carefull (or don't know about them) they can easily fall out when you have the pin out. Once they fall out, the pin won't stay in the link and will work itself loose. Have a jeweler size the watch for you. If the pins fall out, find another jeweler that knows what they are doing.

I bought a cheap $150 Citizen eco-drive wristwatch a year ago when my first Tag Heuer's strap broke and I was awaiting replacement parts. Not expecting very much, I was actually really impressed. So fast-forward a year and for my birthday I receive a really great present: the Citizen men's Acqualand titanium watch. Conceptually it's perfect for me: a robust diver's watch that never needs a battery and that's light and easy to wear. I especially like the inner-dial concept: instead of the manic chrono functions found on watches like the Breitling Chrono Cockpit and the Tag Aquaracer, with the Citizen you get a second hand (60 seconds around the mini-dial) and a 24-hour hand (quite helpful when you regularly cross as many time-zones as I do, and always think in terms of 24-hour time). So far so good...

But sadly the execution lets the watch down. The manual is classic old-fashioned Japanese tech-translation gibberish, though sadly without the unintentional humor of yester-year's efforts. It's pretty much impossible to get the watch to function as described in the manual, and I've read on blogs that the water resistance is highly suspect. So there goes the idea of using this as a dive watch - after all, who wants to have to send the thing in for repairs after every dive?

So all in all I'm still really happy to have received this as a birthday gift and it will definitely be a watch I wear when out skiing and when on business trips. The luminescence is fantastic and makes telling the time in almost any lighting conditions very easy. But I'll stick to my Tags for the heavy lifting and I confess I'm saving my pennies for the gold-and-blue Breitling Chrono cited above because it's just so damned in-your-face appealing and, according to friends who own them, Breitlings are as rock-solid as Tag Heuers (I own a gold 6000 series I know it will still be serving me well 20 years from now). But for less than 8% of the cost of a Breitling and less than 25% of a Tag, the Citizen is a really good watch that is sadly let down by the details. UPDATE: one month into my ownership of this watch, the titanium strap fell apart because one of the link retaining pins just slid out. Of course I can get it repaired under warranty, but I like to think my watches will spend more time on my wrist than in a FedEx envelope on their way to & from the repair facility... So really I can't recommend this company's products and I'd reduce the star rating except Amazon's site doesn't let you do that when you edit or update reviews. Anyhow, not an impressive experience all round, which is sad because the concept of the watch is very interesting.

"Crown Slippage" 2009-09-15

I agree with the people who complained about the crown I returned the watch to Citizen who wanted $65.00 to replace the crown with a smaller one. As I see and have read this is a design fault so the watch can sit the drawer and I will never purchase or recommend Citizen products again which is a shame as I have owned several Citizen watches over the years. The watch looks good and if it wasn't for the fact you have to check the crown position everytime you check the time it would be fine and to be told by Citizen the problem is the way I wear the watch I would like to how you can get that wrong especially with the band provided. From here on in it will be Seiko or Swiss brands for me

Great watch, and yes, it can be a bit of a bother that the crown easily rotates to change the main settings. I have found a solution to the problem that helps. First, I don't put the watch on until I am dressed fully in the morning -- putting on a shirt, etc. can be part of the problem. Second, I simply have gotten into the habit of being careful when I am moving around during the day, and find it moves less and less now that I have built up a habit to check it once in a while.

Easy to read, Citizen quality, and keeps time like no tomorrow. Lots of people comment on how nice this looks with a suit or jeans. I'll come back for more Citizen watches if this is any representation of how good their products are.

I bought this watch because it was so visable in low light and at night. It is a great watch except for two issues. 1) The crown moves very easily and therefore you have to look closely at the small bottom dial to make sure which function the watch is in...it's getting to be a pain in the butt. 2) I was told that it was a sapphire crystal.....it clearly is not due to the scratches and fretting of the edges. It keeps great time !!!

I had this watch for over a year now and I wish to add some valuable comments. Being a very hairy man, I was a bit skeptical about the band, but let me tell you, it is not an issue at all. The watch is a bit heavy, but after a day or so, you'll get used to it.

In contrast to the titanium ones, that are way lighter, this one doesn't get scratches and, it doesn't really look like the picture...it looks way better in person. The perpetual calendar is great and I always receive compliments. The eco-drive runs great, this watch is an amazing piece... for this price, do yourself a favour, buy it!

I would not recommend this watch to buy. As another person stated the crown on the watch moves with your wrist and changes the time to the alarm time. Also, setting the date and keeping it set is a bigger problem. Again, I would not recommend this watch to anyone!

"Absolutely Love this Watch" 2009-09-30

To say that i love this watch is an understatement. The eco-drive technology is just perfect, charge it in light, every kind of light except flourescent for 8hrs or so and it is charged, you will not have to replace any batteries from then on out. The look is so smooth, i have received multiple compliments from people that it looks very sharp. I had a choice between the brown band/face and the black band/face..it was very close. In the end i decided to go with the brown and it looks great with any outfit i wear.

The watch is so good i don't wear it to work lol, i don't wanna take a chance on scratching it. I think i will purchase another citizen watch just for work and keep this one for leisure. I messed with the watch for a good 20 mins and found just about every function fairly easily, it is very easy to set.

All in all, this watch is a very, very good purchase. Probably the best purchase i made since coming back from Iraq besides my 40'inch Sony Bravia. If you remotely like the looks of this watch then look no further, buy it!

I like the look of the watch a lot. It seems to be pretty functional, however here are some cons regarding it.

The Timer only goes up to an hour.

My band broke within the first few months of having it. I called citizen to replace it and they wouldnt do it for free. The cost was $69!!!

Accidently brushed my wrist up against some brick in my apartment and scratched the metal pretty easily.

It stopped once for no apparent reason, but once I reset the time it started up again and has been fine ever since.

Aside from these things, I like the watch.

"Almost Perfect Daily-Wearer" 2009-10-24

With this watch, Citizen came very close to making a product that would be perfect and truly compete with many better Swiss offerings.

+ The titanium case and band keep the mass low. This watch, although bigger than my Tag Heuer Aquaracer, is actually lighter.

+ The chronograph has a crisp feel and action to it. Flyback operation is a nice touch.

- The mineral glass crystal is the major negative here. If this watch came with a sapphire crystal, it would have received five stars.

+/- The alarm is a nice feature, but it is not particularly loud. If you are awake and in an office or home setting, its volume is sufficient.

+ The band is great and has only one minor flaw: The piece of metal at the clasp that connects to the first inside link is stamped sheet metal. This is a weaker design than the rest of the band, and also looks a little cheap. Given the high finish quality of the rest of the band, Citizen should look at how other companies (Tag, Movado, etc.) make this transition (with a solid link), and eliminate this weak point of their design.

+ The lume is quite sufficient. No complaints here.

+ Overall quality is superb.

+ Eco-drive has been great. Once the indicator hit the max mark, it hasn't moved since!

Overall, I am quite satisfied.

UPDATE:

At six months of ownership and wearing it most days, I have two comments:

* The coating on the titanium does indeed wear off. It doesn't look too bad, but it does happen.

* The crystal did get a minor scratch already. Hard to see, but I know it's there. If it were sapphire, there would probably be no scratch.

Do you want an elegant watch? A watch that can be worn with anything, Titanium made and really beautiful... this is how I would describe my new Calibre 2100. It came fully discharged but in about 2 hours it will be fully charged under sun light and ready to be worn! The "official" picture is not as good as it looks in real life, check the customers-uploaded pictures, they are more realistic and give a better glimpse of it.

Had few watches before this one. Got this about a month ago. I have used it every day since i received it. I suggest to shop on ebay if you are trying to find a good deal, saved over 50% off the retail. the craftsmanship of this watch is mindblowing. I never had a watch that i want to wear everyday, I do with this one. I will guarantee that the pictures on the web do not give this watch any justice. If it's been out in the sun for few minutes, and you bring it inside, its got the most beatyful blue dial dots to it. You will not be dissapointed and if you are, got 5 years warranty. unheard of. Buy with confidance. best looking watch I have ever seen. I suggest to pay the extra $40 or $50 and get Titanium cuz its lighter (significantly) and it is skrach proof. I work delivering furniture to peoples houses so the watch gets bang up arround quite a bit. Month and a half later and its still looks like brand new. Some say the crystal is eazy to break or scratch. I say its bunch off bull. Had some big metal parts and door frames hit by, make me think that the glass is done. Not at all. Very impressive and stylish for any occasion. Big dial looks good on a bigger or smaller hand. Absolutley best, hands down.

this watch is a very stylish watch that can be worn for business casual events. i got compliments from all my friends and co-workers on the choice. the light charging function adds to its "charming" effect and makes it more eco-friendly. surprisingly the bracelet is extremely light at first i thought it was poor quality aluminum but it turns out to be titanium. i heard that one draw back is the glass which is not scratch proof, till now i have not scratched it, and hopefully will never do!

My Promaster Carbon showed up a few days ago. I've been using a Citizen Skyhawk for about 8 or 9 years. The two greatest features of that watch are the Eco-Drive solar power and the really slick way you can change timezones. The Promaster takes all the best features of the Skyhawk, adds the radio controlled accuracy, and improves on some things.

It is a bigger watch, but the dial is easier to read. It has luminous marks for all the hours, plus a luminous reference spot on the rotating bezel. The hands are nice and big and have good luminous characteristics.

The Promaster has a feature on the bracelet that allows you to expand the size from you normal adjustment in case you need to wear it over one layer of clothing. This watch has the Citizen fold-over latch which helps prevent accidental openings of the bracelet.

One thing I never needed/used on the Skymaster was the rotating calculator thingy -- which just cluttered things up and didn't rotate all that well anyway. I'll let the pilots up front figure out the time:distance stuff -- hopefully they won't be squinting at teeny-tiny numbers on a watch bezel.

To change modes on the Promaster you to pop the crown out one click, which solves the problem that the Skyhawk has -- self mode-changing through normal wearing (modes change with the crown in the home position).

Since buying the Sykhawk I've been a fan of Citizen watches. The Skyhawk lost maybe 15 seconds a year the first 5 years of use (checked with a GPS). Eco-Drive just makes sense. I've had Seikos which had some of the most bizarre controls, and Casio seems to overreach with features that are flashy, but which don't work all that well -- and that you probably don't need anyway.

The Promaster is one of those watches you look forward to using for many years to come.

Easy to change and swap home time zones and the atomic time signal keeps my watch accurate. The solar power thing is awesome and keeps a good reserve. It is complicated to a degree, but a bit more intuitive than my other Citizen. This U600 movement is really tops. The watch itself is, well, massive. Extremely masculine and certainly makes a statement. My wrist is relatively small, but it was no trouble with a watch pin pusher to remove a couple of links. The clasp allows minor adjustment so you can get it to the perfect fit with no trouble at all. Some have complained the LEDs don't light up the entire dial, but don't believe it was intended to. Still gives enough light to see the hands in the dark in case the luminescence has gone down.

Citizen's Eco-drive Promaster Carbon Chronograph is by far one of the best watches I've ever owned. Citizen has imbued it with both easy functionality and rugged style. The pictures online are great but really don't do it justice. Upon receiving my Promaster Carbon Chronograph, I immediately went online and utilized Citizen's interactive instructions to set the watch. While this is not entirely necessary, Citizen does provide a booklet and mini-disc with the instructions in the box, it is a lot more entertaining to follow along as your watch does exactly what the one pictured on the screen does. It only took a few minutes to check the Promaster Carbon Chronograph's dial alignment, use the radio signal to automatically set the watch, and then set up the remaining options to my liking.

Again, the the Promaster Carbon Chronograph's style is amazing. The carbon fiber detail provides pleasing aspect to the bezel. In addition, the hands and markers on the dial are extremely luminescent and show up nicely in the dark while bright orange LEDs provide light for the two LCD screens.

Now all I have to do is keep myself from buying the Promaster SST Titanium as well!

I just got this for Christmas from Fiance and I gotta say I love it!

It's larger than I expected. It's also heavier than I expected. In other words, it's a girthy machine.

I also wasn't aware of the asymetry of the case. The right side is circular, but the left side is artistically slanted, flairing outwards to the inside of the wrist. I must say, from a industrial designer aspect, this unexpected aesthetic absolutely makes the watch. It's subtle surfacing like this that makes you look at it just a little bit longer.

As for the functionality, I was a little worried when I saw how thick the manual was. But, the original packaging also came with a mini CD ROM that has a wonderful tutorial to get the watch set up. It takes you through the time, then the date, the alarm, the chrono, the tachymeter, and how the eco-drive system functions. I must say, it's much easier to use than I expected.

I would like to thank a previous reviewer on here for suggesting the black face. This is definitely the model to get. The brushed alluminum, black face, white dials provide class and contrast. It's very easy to read. I'm glad I didn't ask for the white face (my first choice).

Overall, this is an exceptional piece for the price. It has that perfect blend of geek and sleek that's a tricky line to tread.

I bought this watch about 2 or 3 years ago, being ready for my first "nice" watch, a step up from the Casio and Timex stuff.

My reqirements were 200m water resistance, a chronograph, date funtion, all-analog features, white hands on a black face, and a stainless or titanium case, and that led me to this machine, which has an outstanding alarm feature and lumeniscent hands and dial to boot.

The glow-in-the-dark hands are REALLY bright, and hours after the lights go out you can still read them.

It's a bit heavy and bulky, but that was part of its appeal to me. I cannot recommend this watch if you demand light weight and thin, though. The chronograph and the watch itself hold accuracy well, it's simple to use, and it looks good for dress or casual. I get asked about it often, and it's functional.

I am impressed with it's accuracy. Against an atomic clock it gains only one second in two weeks. Thats about 26 seconds a year, which is good for a wristwatch, especially a sub-500 dollar watch.

I am both a pilot and a diver, and this could serve either role, although I would not risk it in deep water simply because I like it too much; despite the depth rating, it's better to use a dedicated dive watch.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this watch, and with Citizen Eco-drive watches in general. This is a real "guy's" watch, with it's look and feel. I feel I got my money's worth, and if the watch is as rugged and well-made as it has shown so far, I will probably still be using it for many years to come.

After owning this Citizen Eco-Drive drive for a short period, I simply have to echo the other reviews on here and say that this is an outstanding watch. It's large, bold styling looks great on my (large) wrist. It is solid without being overly heavy.

The alarm function is a nice bonus, though it is definitely not loud enough to wake up anyone but the lightest sleepers (in case you had considered that). The stopwatch feature actually does come in handy on occasion. And for those who have only dealt with traditional quartz watches in the past, it is a pleasure to have the Eco-Drive feature and not have to concern yourself with periodic battery replacements.

Again, a great watch, and highly reccomended.

Initially I was hesitant about this watch because I noticed that some people said that watch was heavy and too big, however, I am very pleased with how it fits.

Before buying it I went to Macy's and tried on the titanium version, which felt alright.

After buying it I took it to Fred Meyer to get 3 links taken off. The watch tech said that the band is prone to breaking later down the road due to some special pins that it has. Although the watch was not charged very much when I arrived, putting it on the window sill during one sunny weekend charged it fully.

After a couple months of wearing the watch to work 5 days a week I have grown to love this watch. The weight and size is perfect for my average wrist. I highly recommend getting this watch.

"Solid dive watch and fun gadget" 2010-01-08

This is the second Citizen Eco-Drive watch I have purchased, having been very pleased with my Caliber 2100. I was looking for a nice dive watch with an analogue dial, a rotating bezel, and good luminosity. I have a fondness for mechanical watches, but for sport diving I wanted a cool gadget with a depth guage to use as a back-up, and those only come in electronic watches. Since I already trusted Citizen's workmanship and design, I picked this one out.

The watch has a tough stainless steel case which is large enough to be a good dive watch but not as ridiculously large as some of the ugly watches on the market. The case is not very thin, but because of the design with its beveled case back and bezel ring, it feels thin and it's not a problem putting my hand in my pocket. The two-tone rotating bezel has a solid, snappy feel to it, but is not too tight to turn with dive gloves on. The function buttons should not be pushed under water, but there is no reason to as the depth guage activates automatically when wet and the bezel is external. The brass crown is a strong screw-down device which sticks out a bit far, which is good for grasping but bad for catching on things.

The dial is a bit busy, but the minute and hour hands are not too hard to find at a glance, and the luminious hands and markers are very bright and highly visible. Unlike the Caliber 2100, however, the luminous paint is a green color rather than blue, and while it is very bright, it does not stay bright as long. In deep water it's still easy to see and shining a flashlight on it for a few seconds brightens it back up.

The date is easy to read, and so is the red multi-function hand, which serves as the depth guage needle when submerged, when dry as a battery charge indicator, and in chrono mode as a stopwatch second hand. The bottom subdial is the small seconds indicator for normal time-telling, and the left-hand subdial is a 24-hr hand. The top subdial is the chronograph minutes dial, which runs to a maximum of 50 minutes.

The chronograph function is odd since it's not very useful. To activate the chrono mode you have to hold down the lower function button for a few seconds and then wait for the multifunction hand to wind around to the zero position, and only then can you start the chrono by pushing the upper function button. The chrono only runs for 50 minutes. If you don't start it after a few minutes it unwinds and goes back to normal mode. This means you can't start it quickly and you can't keep it at the ready for very long. Fortunately, this function is not needed for diving but is only an extra feature.

The rubber strap is long enough to fit around the wrist of most wet suit arms, although a thick wet suit and gloves together make it difficult. There is a no-decompression limits table on the strap, a sturdy stainless buckle and two stainless keepers.

I've found the watch to be very accurate, as expected for an Eco Drive. It's comfortable and fairly good-looking, and the anti-reflective mineral crystal is effective. I put it to the test in deep, murky, ice-cold quarry lake water where I took it to a maximum depth of 75 feet and repeated shallower dives thereafter for 2 days. The depth guage worked as advertised, matching my dive rig guage, and the last dive recorded feature also worked great. The dial was acceptably readable even in the deep murkiness. I've worn it in swimming pool and once I took it into a hot spa before I realized what I was doing, but it didn't seem to harm it, although I don't recommend that kind of abuse for any watch.

I am very pleased with this watch. It's not as upscale or fashionable as a Tag Huer or an Omega Seamaster, but it's got a quality high-accuracy Citizen quartz movement, it's light-powered so you don't have to open the watertight case for a battery change, and it's got the depth guage, which is one of the most useful and cool complications a dive watch can have. Even if you already have one of the Swiss luxury divers, this might make a good solid back-up watch for the next dive trip, and it's not bad-looking in the office, either.

The only problem I would say is that there are not more local service centers in the US, even though there main facility is in CA. only had it for a short time, but it seems like a great watch. chronograph is only in min/sec increments (no tenths), so if you're looking for that you'll be disappointed. stays at the "LV1" charge-level most of the time, but will sneak up to "LV2" on a sunny day. haven't used the dive function (and don't really plan to). seconds hand is kinda small, but the 24-hr hand is a nice touch. bought this watch to replace my last citizen watch, which i purchased in january 1988 and finally retired it in march 2008, so i hope this one will last as long.

"Excellent Value" 2010-01-18

I've had the watch for over a month now, and bought it primarily as a watch I could take to the caribbean and wear in the water and not worry if it got lost or stolen, due its relatively inexpensive price. I think it is a handsome watch, works well and for the price, simply cannot be beat. A few relatively minor criticisms are -- at first I found the watch band a bit uncomfortable due to the metal grommets in the canvas band, but by flexing the band (to make it less stiff) I was able to achieve a comfortable fit, and it has since been fine. Also, I'm not crazy about the start/stop/return functions on the chronograph buttons. They don't have the "feel" and "touch" of my more expensive swiss chronograph. And, as another poster commented, it is difficult to read the face of the watch (due to a lack of a strong contrast) in bright sunlight (though easy to read underwater in strong sunlight) . Overall, though, I am very pleased with the watch and feel I have gotten my money's worth, and then some.

I recently purchased this watch from Amazon. The case diameter is 46mm and 14mm thick, so it is a relatively large watch , but I think the good part about this is that it is really easy to see what time it is. At night, the numbers and dials glow bright blue.

It is replacing an automatic and a quartz as the everyday watch. I have to say that the eco-drive concept is a very good one. I like the idea of not having to replace another battery on my Skagen and DO NOT want to buy an auto-winder for my Hamilton. As long as it gets bright light through out the day, then the battery recharges and is good for days if not months, or more. Notice I said bright light and not just sunlight.

It does not have a locking crown, so it is water resistant and NOT waterproof... The band is canvas and looks (and feels) sturdy. For $130, how can you possibly go wrong?! I'd recommend it.

This is a good watch: solar powered, packed with functionality, and the black looks really good. You can read the pros of the watch in reviews of BL5180-57L (which uses the same movement), so I will not repeat them here. Instead, I will share with you my frustrations with the design.

1. Dual-time requires mode switching. There is no way to check time in the other zone with a quick glance; you have to switch modes (see point #2). If only we could make the 24-hour sub-dial display the hour in the second time zone (like Nighthawk) there would be no need for separate TME and L-TM modes! (Yes, this requires an additional motor, and I would have gladly paid for that. See also point #3.)

2. The features are not quickly accessible. You need to switch modes to access different features, and that can take literally minutes waiting for the hands to finish spinning. Minutes to change alarm settings? To see the second time zone? I don't have that kind of patience.

3. Chronograph maxes out at one hour. They could have used the 24-hour sub-dial to indicate chrono hours (requires the same additional motor as #1). It would not be too bad if the chronograph just keep running after rolling back to zero; I can remember which hour I started timing. Instead it stops and switches displayed time to TME (even if it was in L-TM, why?). Oh, and chronograph resets when you switch to either of the time modes (TME or L-TM).

4. Alarm only in TME time. Suppose you travel from US East Coast to Japan. No problem, you use TME for time at home and set L-TM time to local time in Japan (easily done by design). Now you want to wake up at 7am. You cannot set the alarm to 7am; you have to set it to the US East Coast time when it will be 7am in Japan. We use local time for our daily schedule, why should the alarm be different?

I still think that this is a nice watch. But it would be so much better if the designer at Citizen had used more common sense and made better use of the (currently quite useless) 24-hour sub-dial.

The watch is excellent but I thought it was smaller in size. I did not take time to analyze the various dimentions given. Nevertheless, it is OK. One suggestion, this watch should have the day of the week in a small clock form (M - Monday, T - Tuesday etc) and a hand will direct what day. Then someone could opt for the prefered one

I fell in love with this watch when I saw an ad for it on a big billboard. The watch face looks awesome. I immediately put it on my wish list and the very next day saw an Amazon third party seller (dexclusive) running a promotion for it for $418 (normal price is > $500). I did not hesitate to pull the trigger and order it.

I love big/complicated looking watches and this fits my nerdy needs perfectly. It even comes with a CD with an instruction manual (that's how complicated it is!!). But I had no problems setting it up with the help of the quick-guide that comes in the box (I still haven't opened the CD).

This particular item is all titanium based and, of course, it's eco-drive so no need for batteries...ever.

This watch is everything it is advertised to be. The time functions are easy to read, and having the times of the principal cities of the world available by using the stem and the side-push butttons is very convenient. Adjjusting the strap is easy enough, just don't make a mistake of how much should be cut off, it is unforgiving. The radio controlled functionality is excellent, and not needing to change the battery is a big plus. The LCD windows are a little small, but functional. All in all, it is very worthwhile time piece.

I recently bought the Citizen Skyhawk-AT JY0000-02E & am completely 'sold' on this watch. Some reviewers have stated that this is a heavy watch, it is not, however, it is a large watch. I find the face & all the sub-dials easy to read & my eyesight is not the greatest. At first glance the watch seems complex but after 45 mins of reading the manual it's easy & intuitive to carry out all the functions. Download the manual from [...] in A4 format it's a lot easier to read & use than the very small manual that comes with the watch. It is great not to ever change the battery, correct the time or date or alter the setting back & forth to Daylight Saving Time, all these things are carried out automatically.The slide rule bezel is a standard E6B which will be familiar to pilots, there are instructions in the manual on how to use it but even if you never use it does look cool! This is a 'wear it & forget it' watch. Brilliant!

This is one of my favorite watches. It's great to have a watch that generates power from light, and is always keeping accurate time thanks to the atomic radio. I set the time the first time, then I can basically forget about it until I wear it next. I have peace of mind that it will be accurate and have power. Citizen even says that fully charged, it can keep time for months if stored out of the light (like in a drawer).

Pros:

Solid watch that takes care of itself -- eco-drive, atomic radio. The rubber strap is great and I prefer the clasp over a buckle style strap. When this watch is on my wrist, the strap never snags on any jackets or shirts. Eco-drive is very efficient. Comes with a CD with "quick start" animated instructions, as well as the full user manual. Citizen's website also has animated instructions as well as the full user manual. When I emailed Citizen's customer support, got an answer to my exact question the very next day.

Cons:

My biggest complaint is the inability for the watch to show your local date, if you've set your alternate time display to somewhere significantly distant. For example, my "home" time is Los Angeles, and my "alternate/world" time is set for Hong Kong. There is absolutely no way to display the date in Los Angeles. This becomes a problem when it's already tomorrow in Hong Kong. Citizen's customer support confirmed that the only way to show the local date is to set my "alternate/world" time to also be Los Angeles. Ugh. This watch does so much -- it has a slide rule, atomic radio, eco-drive, but can't show me the local date. This really feels like a basic (and mandatory) display for a watch of this kind.

Overall I'm still really happy with this watch. The face can at first feel a little cluttered, since there is so much info being displayed between the multiple subdials and two LCD displays. If you're a fan of high tech (and have a good memory for the current date), this watch is for you!

I could not be more pleased with this watch. It's great looking, large but not too large and has a decent weight to it. The Eco Drive feature gives me a peace of mind and with normal wear, I have never had the watch stop due to lack of light. "Great with a few cons" 2009-10-04

My previous aquamaster stopped keeping time and couldn't seem to find the right repair shop. I work offshore on oil rigs, and wanted to upgrade to a chronograph urethane strap (some rigs don't allow metal band wrist watches) that showed the day and date as well. Many times I wake and don't know what day it is! I looked at many options and decided on the Black Eagle. I've had it for almost three years now, and has gone very strong. Aside from all the great compliments that other reviews have, the only quirks I have are: (1) The face (not dial) is not scratch resistant. My face has suffered a few scratches which kinda annoys me. I recently tried to polish off the scratches which helped a little. This is probably not a watch for use while working if it's liable to get scratched. (2) The crown is difficult to turn while on the wrist. (3) Don't depend on the alarm(s) to wake you up. It's too soft to wake you up, but good enough otherwise. I use two of the three alarms to remind me of daily meetings I have to attend! I use the countdown timer alot when I'm at home cooking! I don't travel that much anymore, so the time zone feature is not really used that much, although I still like it. I've received a few compliments on it, and some guys have even asked me to sell it to them! My only worry is if the band were to break - where would I get a replacement?

I have a few citizen watches and am now used to have a great watch every time I buy one of these gems.

This one is no different, great quality, keeps good time and is confortable to wear.

As a young boy i received my first citizen watch from my grandmother and got used to see them as great time machines. This opinion has never changed since they do make great watches at a affordable enough price and stand as one of the best price/quality makes in watchmaking and as i said, this black eagle skyhawk is no different. :)

Solar powered ( Ecodrive ) is a must in dive watches ( i have two citizen Ecodrive dive watches and both are outstanding ) and altough this is not a dive watch ( i don't even intend to go swimming with it ), solar powered means you don't need to change batteries. Sun is always shinning in Portugal so battery is always full :)

It's relatively simple to use, has enough features so it will keep you entertained for a long time and has plenty of time zones, should you need to travel. I withdrew most of them so that the menu doesn't show all those cities but you can go back anytime and recover them.

It's not the easiest watch to work with but also not the most complicated i have. So it's fun to have it.

The only least good points are the lack of a backlight but i already knew this before buying it ( maybe the new skyhawks with backlight could appeal more to all those who need backlight ) and also it's just a little big heavier than it should ( stainless steel ),that is, comparing with a Tissot T-touch which is all titanium and rubber strap. Both are the most confortable watches to wear, very very nice indeed.

However, it's not a heavy watch, just a bit heavier than it should?!?

Amazon US is great indeed, fast delivery, good packaging, all in all a great service. All watches ordered from them arrived in fine condition. Had bought from them before, expecting another watch from them right now :)

I have had this watch for about a week now. Being a collector with everything on hand from Casio to Oris and Tag Heuer, i'd have to say this ranks in the upper end of all of my watches for quality, pricing aside.

It still qualifies as a "pilot's watch" to me because of the great legibility of the white hands and markers against the black, though I would agree with many about the reverse LCD display being more difficult to read in low lights. Fit and finish are great, and no worries on batteries with the Eco-drive technology. I'd recommend this model to anyone looking for a watch that bridges the gap between casual and dress. It is a bit heavy, but with the rubber bracelet adjusted properly, one gets used to it quickly. It is one of the more comfortable watches on the wrist that I own. 5 stars!

I love this watch. I can see how people might have a problem reading the dials, but for the average person, this shouldn't be an issue. It's got great features and is extremely cool looking.

I orginally purchased this watch with the bracelet style band. After two years, I was sick of that band (it's a bit heavy). After zero help from Citizen's customer service, I got a jewelry store to order the rubber band style. I didn't like the quick clasp (I know I'm particular) because I wanted to use it for more active pursuits. So - here's what worked for me and I wanted to share it with you in case you had the same desire.

I bought a $10 Timex rubber band (make sure it's 20mm). Take the band to a jewelry store and have them canabalize the buckle, "arm" and rubber holders. Then switch them over to your Citizen. It should take about 10 minutes, tops. With this modification, this is simply the perfect watch - stylish, tough, functional, and no need for a battery!

This watch in stainless is fairly heavy for a watch so be prepared. Love the function of the watch, but returned it for the exact same model in Titanium. I was searching for a watch that was both analog and digital, had a backlight, stopwatch, slide rule, world time, alarm, calendar and countdown timer and all i can say is I FOUND IT!!

This watch not only arrived on time, but arrived with everything i expected and more!!

It looks simply awesome, it's definitely a man's watch as it's quite big and heavy, but it doesn't take anything away from this specimen! I use it as an all purpose watch, that is, sport, casual and dress. I recommend this watch to anyone looking for a watch to meet all the aforementioned criteria and at a reasonable price!

I have 4 Eco-Drive watches and this one is the best yet!

Sporty and elegant. Not too heavy. It has a stopwatch that figures out the average speed of a race car based on the track length you input into the watch. It also automatically shows the fastest lap.

I bought it for $450 out the door, so maybe there are better prices out there.

I just received this watch as a Christmas present from my girlfriend and It is sweet. I had told her I was looking for a second watch to give my Tag a rest and I gave her three Citizen watches I would wear. She gave me this one and its a beauty. I really like the contrasting face as it gives the watch an impressive look. It was easy to charge in sunlight and the manual says a full charge could last 240 days. That's impressive as well. My tag only holds a kinetic charge for 3 days. Its light on the wrist and looks like a watch should. I have a new favorite watch.

I cannot count the number of times people have stopped me in mid-sentence once they see me wearing this watch and compliment me on it. People I know with watches 5 times the retail price of this watch have asked me the model number so they can go get one. Functionally the watch is very sound. I have literally smacked the crap outta this watch and cringed before looking at it, but each time it's just as gorgeous as before. I've hurt my wrist before I've hurt this watch. BY all means don't go whacking the holy hell out of it, I'm just sayin'. The band on it looks great and I find the "weight issue" some folks complain about to be comforting to me and gives me a sense that it's better constructed than some feather light slab of junk. If you're complaint is that you need to manually adjust the date some months then go buy a $12 Casio with a calculator on it and be done with it. This watch will turn heads by folks who even know a thing or two about decent watches. You can throw this thing in a drawer for 2 months and it will still be running off the old charge before you stored it. Even if it does run all the way down just set in under a lamp for a while and you're good to go. THe white face isn't really white it's a patterned swirly type of deal that's pretty nifty. The contrast of the black inner dials really set the whole thing off. Uber swank. This watch looks like you dropped a grand on it easily. It makes me smile every time I wear it.

My wife bought this watch for me 2 years ago.

This watch has managed to keep up with me and all the things i do.

After a 2 year beating, regularly bumping into walls glass first - The only proof that it's had a hard life would be a TINY scratch on the lense.

I would strongly suggest this watch to anyone. (That I don't know ofcourse!)

This watch manages to make you feel special regardless of the low price. Take my word for it.

I have an Omega Speedmaster and it doesn't turn as many heads as the Calibre 2100.

This watch is a must have for anyone.

Be warned though, it is on the heavy side, and will take a little time to get used to.

I am writing this review as a long term user of this watch. Those who have reviewed it after only a few months of ownership cannot have a long term perspective. I am going to try to fill that gap for those who wonder if the watch will last in the long run.

I bought my ECO Drive Caliber 2100 at a local jewelry store about 5 years ago. I love watches but I'm not a collector. But, I do have small drawer full of working watches. I have worn chronograph type movements, including analog quartz, digital, and automatic mechanical, exclusively for over 30 years. I buy a new watch about every 5 years whether I need one or not. I did not need this one but I could not resist. It is flat beautiful, better in person than in the photographs. The detailing of the dial is up to the best around. It has very subtle details that keep me looking at it often. I still think it is amazing.

I tend to be hard on watches. I do a lot of hobby type work and often I forget to take the watch off-a bad habit. This has lead to scratches on the crystal but the case is unmarked. I agree with others that a sapphire crystal would improve the watch. The stainless steel band is high quality and has proven strong. It does have a few scratches, though. Since I wear the watch every day, I guess it is natural that the back will collect scratches and mine has.

Functionally, this watch has been perfect. I have had zero problems. It has never been serviced but service is due. Time keeping is great. I only set it when the time changes. The chronograph works great but it does not do lap times. Not a great loss for me. The alarm does not get used much because the sound is so weak. The dial illumination lasts through the night. My old eyes sometimes have a hard time seeing the fine markings on the chrono dials depending on the light. Usually, this is not a problem but I wish the markings were a little bolder. The Date Window is set rather deeply into the dial face and is small. Often, I have to adjust the light angle to see the date. This is not usually a problem but it is something I would change. Setting the end of month date is easy because the first detent on the crown moves the date indicator only. There is no need to reset the time. This is a very nice feature. Other than the occasional splash of water when doing things around the house, I have not challenged the water resistant specification. So far, water has not been a problem.

Battery charge works very well. During daily normal use (I have an indoor job), the charge indicator never moves off full charge. A few months ago I bought a new Casio digital and put the Citizen aside for about 4 months in very reduced lighting. The charge indication went down to about 1/2 charge. The watch continued to keep perfect time. Eight hours in bright light brought the indicator up to full charge where it has remained as I again wore it daily. This is very impressive performance, indeed.

Others have commented on the weight and size. It is heavy. It is large. My wrists are large and this is not a problem. The fit is fine. Smaller wrists may not work as well with this watch. As for the weight, it does seem heavy if you pick it up. But, when I am wearing it I don't notice the weight. I have tried the titanium model and I like it. I may buy one.

All in all, this is the best watch I have owned. It is accurate, convenient, versatile and rugged. Did I say it is beautiful? It looks much more expensive than the selling price. I don't think you can go wrong with this one.

"Cheap citizen watch, has its flaws" 2009-06-15

I've owned this watch for about a month now, and it was a gift...that said, I'm giving serious consideration for getting a better Citizen Watch. My main gripe with the watch is that its band is rather "chunky" for lack of a better word to use; most watch bands can be folded over themselves (meaning the band can make very tight bends) - not so with this band. The band is made in such a way that people with smaller wrists such as myself, will suffer. I can find no sizing of the band that fits me - I either get it so lose it slides off my wrist and down my arm, or so tight that it leaves a mark on my wrist.

On top of that, the watch is pretty primitive - the hands don't seem to line up with the markings very well, and the chronograph randomly will stop working.

A main feature I would get a better watch for would also be a perpetual calendar - the calendar on this watch assumes every month has 31 days...so at the end of some months you will need to manually adjust the date, which I find annoying. Before this watch I had a cheap Ironman, but it had a perpetual calendar that I never needed to worry about. For people who rely on their watch for the date, I highly recommend looking at some of the Citizen watches with a perpetual calendar feature.

All in all, this watch looks like a Fossil watch, but has the Citizen name on it. The band scratches easily, but as it is just brushed steel, the scratches won't show up that well, which is a good thing. I've bumped the crystal a few times on hard surfaces, but it hasn't scratched...yet.

The watch face certainly looks good in my opinion - the dial is a nice deep blue.

Late edit: Well, the crystal has scratched finally. A few times. I take the watch off when at my computer so I don't do too much harm to it...and yet there the scratches are. Out of curiosity to see how I did it, I grabbed one of my kitchen knives (hardened steel) and tried to scratch it...no luck (as expected. Quartz Crystal is a higher MOH than steel.)

Also, the band is taking a pretty bad beating...just daily use has left it scratched up quite a bit. Since this is stainless steel and not titanium it doesn't show up that much, but the scratches are there.

I own three Citizen watches, ranging in price from $400 to $129, and have been extremely pleased with them. I bought this one to give as a gift, and it does not reach the same standard as the others I bought. I guess for the price it is reasonable, but it just feels... cheap. It reminds me of Fossil watches-- extremely heavy bracelet, chunky, etc. In fact, you can get a nicer Fossil watch for the money you spend on this one. Looking at the picture, it seems as if the bezel would turn, as on many watches-- but it does not. This is the first time Citizen has let me down.

Comprei este relogio para substituir dois outros modelos semelhantes da Citizen e que duraram 15 anos sem qualquer manutenção a não ser troca das baterias. O diametro do relogio se mostrou um pouco pequeno para meu pulso, mas esse era um item que eu ja sabia - não foi surpresa. No mais o relogio é preciso e muito bonito, sóbrio, sem aquelas alegorias que outros modelos de fabricantes diversos teimam em 'desenvolver'.

Se existe uma coisa que poderia ser mudada é o tamanho do acumulador de minutos, que em vez de acumular 60 minutos em um mostrador tão pequeno, poderia acumular somente 30 minutos, facilitando em muito a leitura. O acumulo no outro mostrador seria progressivo , de 30 em 30 minutos .

Essa caracteristica existe em modelos da Zodiac, Breitling Navitimer, Omega Speedmaster e não seria um fator de aumento de preço.

I just received this watch as a gift and have been very impressed in the few days I have owned it. The watch was very easy to set as the instructions were straight forward and each hand; chronograph, hour, minute, second, are true to the markings on the face. I own another watch from a different manufacturer in which the minute hand seems to fall just short of the marker when it changes from minute to minute. The imperfection in that watch is not enough to notice at a glance but I am picky about quality. The Citizen Men's Chronograph seems to have remained true to their history of quality. I am very impressed with the look and feel of this watch as well as the quality of movement. The face of the watch has a unique, metallic-black look instead of matte black. Markers on the face as well as the hour and minute hands remain brightly lit at night after watch is placed near a lamp or bulb. One more thing I enjoyed was the weight of the watch. It is not as heavy as other watches I have owned but seems very sturdy and very well manufactured. I would recommend this watch and will continue to buy Citizen in the future with no hesitation.

"Great watch for the money" 2009-10-11

I am not one to spend a lot of money on luxury items however some things that you use every day can justify the added expense. I would love to buy a luxury watch as I do appreciate such things however I can't bring myself to spend the money at this point in my life. I purchased this watch after my Fossil broke and could not be happier with my purchase. Fossil watches look great for up to a year but the quality is not there. They are inexpensive, look great, but are not in for the long haul. The Citizen Eco-Drive ($200) I bought after 6 months has been great. The face has been very scratch resistant and the stainless case/band have held up as well. I often get compliments from my friends who own much more expensive watches. I shopped for a few months in stores and online for a new watch and am happy with my purchase. Hope this helps someone with their decision.

Honestly this watch just blows my mind...I have a lot of watches but this one is by far the most advanced watch i have...when i received the watch i opened the box..right when i removed the cover the watched turned it self on and set it self to the right time and date...I was very amazed...this watch is a must have.

This is a great watch but only reason I am giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is mostly because the band is very very stiff. I figured that after some use and flexing the band that it would loosen up but no its just as stiff as when I got it.

The positives of this watch are:

The band does not grab my arm hair. I have others that I paid more for that will pull the hair off my arm.

Atomic time sync. It is great being able to look at my watch and not have to wonder if I forgot to reset it for daylight savings or not.

Everything my job does is in eastern time and I live in central time so I will set the analog for central and the digital for eastern.

Some of the negatives are:

The very stiff band.

The light on this watch is not that bright and makes the digital part of it to see allot of the time, as well the hands on it the luminescence is not that bright either. So in dark areas this watch can be near useless. I have seen better and have paid more for worse, but one would think for this watch being over $500 that it would not have this issue.

What would had made this a perfect watch:

Better back lighting. I have one watch that when I press the light button it will light up the digital and analog hands as well.

Loosen up the band.

I bought this watch because I wanted a more stylish replacement for my Casio. It had to meet two important criteria:

1. It had to set itself atomically

2. It had to be self-powered.

This Citizen watch does both those things, and looks great doing it. It feels incredibly solid, and consequently is a very heavy watch. You might want to go to a jewelry store and try one on. It works amazingly well, sets itself just as advertised, and fits well (with a bit of adjustment at the jewelry store). I've had it for a few days now and it has only a couple of problems:

1. If you're left-handed, as I am, you'll have to take it off to reach the main stem to adjust some settings. Fortunately, you rarely have to do this.

2. For some inexplicable reason, the date setting is tied to the second clock. So, if you live in, say, Los Angeles, and you set the second clock to, for instance, Tokyo, the date shown will match whatever day it is in Tokyo, which is usually tomorrow. If there's a way to change it, I haven't figured it out. So, I have to have both time zones set to the same zone in order to see the correct date.

Other than that, this is an amazing watch, and unless you only value something like a Rolecks as a status symbol, this will feel great on your wrist.

Pros:

I presently own 7 Citizen Ecodrive watches. I have a variety of dive watches and dress watches. The Skyhawk is the latest and I love the atomic time reception, although the other Citizens don't seem to lose time. They are reliable, and very accurate. I also own upscale Rolex and Omega watches (automatics). My Citizens out perform these Chronographs? by a long shot.

correspondance and fee's were paid through amazon. When i accepted delivery of the watch from UPS, i was told they would not

give me it unless i paid the £58.77 duty tax. At no point was i made aware that i would havew to pay this tax, and had i known

i wouldn't have ordered it, as this tax made it no cheaper than to but it here in the UK. When i contacted Amazon to make them

aware of this situation they didn't wan't to know. I am having to issue proceedings against them through court to reclaim

my money. I would not reccomend Amazon to anyone.

There already exist many reviews on Amazon for this watch. Most of the reviews can be found in the non-Titanium, non-Blue-Angels models. I just need to add a couple things. (I own this Blue Angels Titanium model).

TITANIUM-SPECIFIC PART: The Titanium version is much lighter! I compared it against a stainless steel model. The difference is huge. I know what most guys are thinking, "unlike this reviewer, I'm a real man who can handle an extra ounce on my wrist." FYI I consider myself pretty athletic. But I appreciate not feeling the watch on my wrist most of the time. Bottom-line: it's a personal choice. Titanium is lighter, stronger, and personally makes me feel better about this watch. Stainless steel is cheaper and gets the job done.

NON-TITANIUM-SPECIFIC PART - WATER RESISTANCE: The product description says "water resistant depth: 660 ft". I bought this watch thinking I could take it for scuba diving. The face of the watch says "WR 200" and the backplate says "WR 20BAR". But if you look up the owners manual, both these terms actually mean you can only skin-dive (I guess that means snorkeling.) Scuba-diving with air tank is NOT ok for this watch.

CALENDAR: HUGE pain in the a** to use. The date is only displayed for world time, not local time. This means at those hours when the world city is a day ahead of or behind your local time, you cannot get an accurate reading of your local date. The only fix is to set the world time city as your local city, which defeats the purpose of the "World Time" feature.

IN THE DARK: This watch is great in the dark! The luminescent dials are very bright in the dark. Additionally, there is a backlight. Because Apollo powers this watch, I don't need to worry about the backlight shortening battery life.

This is my first Citizen and I LOVE it. Still, I'll give it four stars, because the awkward calendar could have been very, very easily avoided by just a slight amount of foresight in design.

This is my second Blue Angels Skyhawk, so I had some familiarity with setting it up. Everything worked fine. I stood next to a window so the radio control could kick in. It's apparently radio controlled and keeps perfect time. I have a Casio radio controlled watch which is also a nice watch, and they both keep the same time. When I go away, I'lkl see how it works away from my location - it has three zones, Japan, Europe, and the U.S. So, some things I'm still learning. "Excellent watch for pilots!" 2009-12-23

I'm a private pilot working towards his instrument, commercial, and multi-engine certificates, and I love my watch. There are two gripes I have:

1) The band, even on the stainless, sucks. I'm not hard on my watch at all, and the forward side (I wear it on my left wrist) is full of wear marks and scratches from only resting on tables as I sit and read or do work. I'm pretty unhappy with that fact, and think that for a $[...] watch the band should be more scratch resistant. I haven't had this problem with other metal band watches.

2) There is no light. You wouldn't think it would take much to add two small LED's and an extra button for a light for night use. The "glow in the dark" hands stop working after a half hour-ish of darkness and you can't read anything without some light source. I haven't found this to be too much trouble for night flying since I have an overhead red light that I can hold the watch up to, but it's inconvenient and potentially hazardous since your taking your attention off of flying for that much longer. For a true aviator's watch you'd think they'd have thought this one through.

Gripes aside it's an excellent watch. I researched long and hard for a good aviators watch, and I settled on this one. While others may have better features (i.e. better looking, different layout, etc.) this one had the best of most of what I was looking for. I wanted something that I could use as my timer, a backup E6B, my zulu time (although I don't use it much and find myself doing the math in my head just as quick), my watch...and for future use if I become a professional pilot I can keep track of time with time zones. The Eco-drive is an excellent feature that although I haven't had it long enough to know how well it really works, in theory it is excellent for the environment, and for piece of mind knowing that you'll never need to worry about a dead watch at and inconvenient time. Also, the alarm clock feature is excellent. There are three separate alarms that are easy to set up, turn on and off, and use. I don't use that in the airplane, but I do use it for work and it is awesome; not too noisy, and not too quiet, but I doubt it's audible in the airplane. I don't think there's much more to say besides if you're looking for an inexpensive REAL aviator's watch this is about the cheapest you'll find, and it will have all the features and then some that you'd ever want.

Citizen, replace my band with something that doesn't scuff up so easy and this watch gets 5 stars from me.

I purchased the Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Skyhawk Chronograph Watch #JR3000-51F because I've owned it's predecessor: the Navihawk Chronograph. My Navihawk died after about a dozen years of satisfactory service. As I discovered the hard way, breaking the case seal of the Navihawk to replace the battery (which was necessary three times over it's lifetime) created a pathway for humidity and skin oils to penetrate and corrode the interior. (This despite the fact that I never swam nor showered while wearing the Navihawk.) The cost to repair my Navihawk was almost as much as the purchase price of a new Skyhawk.

I compared the JR3000-51F with the titanium version... Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Titanium Skyhawk Chronograph Watch #JR3060-59F...as well as the model that synchronizes with an atomic clock signal...Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Skyhawk A-T Watch #JY0000-53E. Having been accustomed to the weight of a stainless case and bracelet, I didn't think that the titanium version offered me much added value for the price differential, particularly since some other reviewers had noted that the titanium model was susceptible to scratches. I came to a similar conclusion regarding the "AT" model. My experience with the very accurate time-keeping qualities of the Navihawk led me to believe that the JR3000-51F would satisfactorily meet my needs. The "Eco-Drive" feature clinched my decision to purchase the Skyhawk as opposed to competitors.

Upon receipt of my Skyhawk (which arrived earlier than the projected delivery date), it worked right out of the box. The time was off by a couple of minutes, but the interactive instructions (on the CD in the box) made it a snap to correct the time. My prior experience with the somewhat idiosyncratic process of adjusting the Navihawk probably helped me get off to smooth start with the Skyhawk. Count me as a happy camper.

"How to use slide rule" 2008-11-10

OK. For those who bought this watch because it looked neat, but had no clue what it is to own an aviator watch, here is an example of how to use the slide rule.

1. Lets say you are at a restaurant, and your bill comes out to $55. You wander what is 15% tip. Take the outer dial and align the number 15 on the outer dial to 10 on the inner dial. That will be your tip percentage. If you want to give 20% align 20 to the inner 10. Now, find 55 on inner dial. You should see about 82 for the corresponding outer dial. Divide 82 by 10. You get $8.20 which is your tip. Now, when you take some one out for a date, you could look like you actually use the bezel.

2. TAX can be calculated the same way. Just align the tax percentage on the outer dial to 10 on the inner dial.

3. You are on a road trip with rug rats. You have 200 miles to go and you are traveling at 70mph. The back seat monsters asks "are we there yet." You move 70 on the outer dial to the top arrow, where inner dial is 60. Find 20 on the outer dial. Corresponding inner dial is the amount of minutes to your destination. In this case 170. You are not done. Check the inside of the watch. on the outer edge of the face, you should see hour marks. 170 should correspond to 2:50 hours. Now tell the monsters that it is going to be another 2hours and 50 minutes so go to sleep.

I hope these will be useful for someone. As for negative reviews I have seen,

1. If you don't realize that almost all watches that are considered higher class than Casio Sports watches don't have lights, you don't deserve anything like this. Are you going to give negative reviews to Rolex because it does not have a light?

2. This is aviator watch guys! If you make them smaller, you will not be able to read or use the slide rule. If you can't realize that, buy different watch.

3. There is about a page explaining how to use the slide rule. But, since this is aviator watch, they probably expect you to know how to use E6B. Otherwise, hope my review helped.

It is a good watch with very nice features. I like it because I can adjust the time zone very quickly and still know the time in a home zone. I was worried it might be too big for my wrist, but it fits fine.

I bought from Amazon and got it from a company in South Texas. However, there were a few problems. I think it must have sat on the shelf for awhile before sale. The button would stick for awhile, it doesn't anymore. Also, the "On" symbol (for alarms) looks more like "Ox". This might be a rebuild or a factory second. Still I like it alot.

I compared this Blue Angels version with the Black/Orange version of this Skyhawk model and liked the blue/yellow tones much better. So I bought it.

However, Citizen decided to make a change in one of the more important controls between the two variations, the Crown. On the other version, the crown is knurled. Therefore, it's easier to get a grip on it to pull it out as needed. You need to pull the crown out one stop to change to any of the other modes. If you spend good money for something with all these features, you will figure on using them.

The crown on the Blue Angels version, albeit nice and sleek, is smooth around it's circumference. When it's on your wrist, you either need a very long (and curved) fingernail to pull the crown from underneath, or you need to remove it from your wrist first. The only point where you can "catch" the crown to pull it is underneath and at the base of the crown. The top side of the case covers the bevel at the base of the crown.

Sure, you can leave extra links in the band and "maybe" be able to get underneath the crown to use it while wearing it, but the watch will be spinning all around your wrists during the day.

Now, I don't know if frail fingers would do better operating this. Just roughly gauging the human physique, and proportions of the extremities, only someone with large enough arms/wrists would even feel comfortable wearing a watch this size and weight for any period of time. Therefore, I would expect those who can wear it to have larger diameter fingers compared to the rest of the populace. Those larger fingers just cannot get under the crown very easily to activate it.

I like the watch's features, but I'm afraid I might have to return it. I will be using the alarms and chronograph quite frequently and having to remove the watch each time I want to do something with it simply will not do. Especially for the price it sells for.

I might like the black/orange version if I give it a chance. That has the knurled knob. Or, I might just trade it in for a Citizen Promaster SST instead.

Have owned this watch for two years now. I love that it's so light, tells time accurately, never needs winding and seemingly bulletproof. Also, the silver color is not overly shiny, but not too dull either. Just know that the watch won't look like the one pictured on Amazon unless you have it under some really bright lighting. The only downsides for me are that the band scratches easily and that you may have to adjust the day of the month when the next month rolls along, since this isn't a perpetual watch. This is my first titanium watch but definately not my last.

this is my second eco-drive in 10 years. the first one had a one piece case that was not servicable. This model looks nice, futureistic but tasteful and the grey face/titanium case is easier to read than I thought it would be.

The only downside to the watch is that I have found a stainless steel version of the watch from a much cheaper watch company, exact same case design but different movement. I guess the case AND band are made in China, so the only part of the watch that's Japanese is the eco-drive movement.

The quality is very good, the band is a little stiff and is not as comfortable as my first eco-drive from 1999.

The crystal is not sapphire but it is strong and protected slightly by being recessed.

The crown will not stay screwed down on my watch after only a year of use. This renders the watch worthless for diving. The warranty only covers movement so if you have a problem with the crown or water resistance you are out of luck. After being told that only the movement was covered by the service center I sent an email directly to Citizen and never received a reply. So to sum it up I spent $289.00 for one year of service. I'll never buy anything from Citizen again.

My husband's review of his new watch:

I have been searching for a reasonable "divers style" watch which incorporates an alarm. I have had several and they usually work well until after the first battery change; follow the battery change with a dip in the pool and watch-death has been the typical result. The Citizen Eco-Drive is a great solution and I am very happy with it; I eagerly look forward to not having to change batteries. The watch is good looking (male opinion) and works well with a few idiosyncrasies:

- the alarm is very quiet; I have not heard it yet, unless I am already awake. This is disappointing, but not unexpected based on reviews from others. Citizen should work on this and consider having the alarm repeat after its first short burst; a second "blast" might help stir one from slumber.

- the crown tends to turn from rubbing on my wrist and change the function from "time" to Chronometer to "Local-time" to "alarm". Easily corrected but can complicate a quick glance to check the current time. Some way of shielding the crown, or making it less prone to accidental turning would be convenient.

- I like the "local time" function that allows you to reset to another time zone; it works pretty well and basically resets the hour hand only. This is handy if you travel, especially to areas multiple time zones away.

- resetting the watch, or changing functions is a bit entertaining, if you are easily amused, as any changes seem to result in extended periods during which the hour and minute hands race around the face of the watch until stopped at the desired point.

- I was not too interested in the Chronometer function as I have trouble reading the small dial on the watch. I have used it and it is straightforward, but would have been happy without that function.

I like my new watch very much; I wish the alarm was louder.

Bought the watch in Nov, 2009. Works great. Slightly heavy, but fits well on my wrist. Am yet to check out all the features on the watch. Dual time displays are great and so is the A-T. Will update the review later again. Amazon's free shipping had the watch delivered in exactly 5 days. 5 stars from me.

PS - Watch the price on this. It goes up and down and then back up. Find the right time to buy and save a good 10-15% on it.

This watch is a great buy for the money. I bought the watch for ~$400 USD due to a math/discount error at a local jeweler. The dials are mostly easy to read, no need for a battery, dual time zone without any button presses, and atomic sync are why I bought the watch. It delivers on all these promises. The watch appears to be of quality construction and came with a 5 year manufacturer warranty. One thing I did not realize (or check prior to purchase) is that there is no way to know the date by simply looking at the watch face. For a watch that has so many dials why isn't there a date box like my $18 Casio?

Overall, a great watch, I would recommend to friends or anyone who asked. If you ever need to know the date immediately, do not buy this watch.

I have had the Citizen Skyhawk AT atomic watch for a year now and have never been more satisfied with a watch. My previous watch was an Omega Speedmaster which was heavy and clunky and lost a minute every day. I began to get seriously interested in buying a watch with extreme accuracy. Living in Australia, I thought an atomic radio controlled watch was out of the question because we don't have any atomic time signals broadcast here. When I tried to research accuracy in watches I discovered the term used for an accurate watch is a chronometer and the most accurate watches in the world were made by Breitling, particularly their SuperQuartz models. However these cost A$5000.00 or more which is a bit of a stretch for the wallet. And then, to my surprise, I discovered a website where people in Australia were posting that their atomic watches/clocks were picking up a time signal from overseas. A pilot here in Brisbane posted a great review about his Citizen Skyhawk AT and said his watch regularly picked up the Japanese time signal at night. As soon as I read his post, I bought one too and I haven't looked back.

Pros:

What I love most about this watch is that it's set and forget - being radio-controlled I never have to adjust the time, ever, period! And it has atomic accuracy - way more accurate than the Breitling SuperQuartz watches which still loose 15 seconds a year - at a fraction of the price.

I have received many compliments on my watch from family and co-workers alike. The watch has a very attractive, large dial - more impressive even then in photos and pictures online. The stainless steel bracelet is very durable and some say heavy, but although I only have a small wrist I found the watch very comfortable to wear and did not feel inconvenienced by it in any way.

The mineral glass is very strong and completely resistant to scratches - mind you, I work in an office so it's not in the way of harm very often but I haven't had a single scratch on it in over a year.

I love the build quality of this watch - it is pure class!

The solar powered battery works without requiring any full sunlight. Ambient light alone is enough to keep it running at full capacity.

I love the beautiful presentation box it came in - it doubles as a nice stand for my watch at bedtime.

Cons:

The hardest part in setting up the watch was adjusting the bracelet to fit my wrist. The links were hard to remove and it took a good hour or so for me to get it right.

Just like another reviewer here said, I wish they had used time zones rather than cities as my city is too small to rate a mention. Pilots might prefer time zones too.

Some people have worried about the crown wearing out from repeated setting of certain functions and although that's possible, I almost never use mine like this at all so I am not in the slightest bit worried about this.

Wish list:

I would love for the LCD to be bigger. Not only just to make it more readable but so that it can show the date and the time simultaneously - it seems a real shame to waste such fabulous atomic accuracy on the analogue display alone, just so I can see the date. Please Citizen - make it a dual analogue/digital time display with extra room for the date too, next time around!!

Arrived on time. The setup instructions were easy to follow. Charging did not take long. Have to place watch near east facing window of my apt to receive signal. I live in downtown San Fran in the middle of large buildings. Watch wears nice, doesn't feel heavy or too big on my small wrist. I actually prefer having to pull out the crown to change the functions on this watch. I own another Citizen chrono which requires just rotating the crown to change from time-chrono-alarm, and sometimes when that watch moves on my wrist, the crown rotates.

when the eco drive watch had a cloud of moisture on the inside of the crystal,i sent it back to citizen for warranty repair.they supposedly repaired it and returned it. some 8-10 months later,it did it again,so i returned it still under warranty.they claimed i had unscrewed the crown and would not repair it without payment.i never knew the crown could be removed and never touched it.they are the only ones who ever serviced the watch. never again.was going to sue,but they aren't worth the time.

I love the fact that it never needs a battery, and with the strength of titanium and the durability of scratch-resistant mineral, I won;t have to buy another watch for a long time. This is an amazing watch that is incredibly light weight, loaded with features. I have found one flaw so far, and unfortunately, it's a big one. It keeps track of the date, but only in the time zone displayed on the digital window. Unless you want to keep track of your local time both with the watch hands and the digital window showing the same time, you'll have to remember to pretty much remember the current date on your own. Personally, I think an oversight like this can be a deal-breaker for some. For all of its technology and such, it doesn't have a dedicated to keep track of the date locally.

My wife got this watch for me 8 years ago when I was traveling to Asia a lot. The dual time zone function works great, and titanium material makes this watch much lighter than the stainless steel model which is very easy to wear. I love this watch and wore it everywhere over the years, and you can tell because the titanium will get scratched over time. The watch is very durable; it has stand up to all kinds of abuse including contact sports and skiing. But until recently years when I started to go snorkeling with this watch, that is when I started to see some moisture build up getting inside of the display. The moisture seems to come and go for a while, but not long after the watch just died completely. Since the watch has already passed the 5 year warranty period, I decide to go ahead and troubleshoot it myself. I purchased a watch opening kit from Amazon.com, open the watch, and found that the sea water somehow got inside of the steel parts that is in the turning knob and corroded that area. I can see that there were some rusting going on and eventually that part broke off which the water can get in.

Since this watch has taken so much abuse and still lasted this long, I feel that I got my moneys worth, so I would definitely buy this watch again. But the next time I buy a watch like this, I would probably try to avoid contact with water at all cost.

What's to like: I find the watch to be attractive, though not everybody agrees (my wife, for one, thinks it looks cheap). It's surprisingly light, given the size, and it keeps good time.

What's not to like: Setting the time and other settings is an almost comically elaborate process, compared to other watches. It will involve at least a few of the following steps: make sure the 'zero' setting is accurate, fix it if needed, set your city and time zone offset, set the time digitally, and swapping the digital and analog times. Though there are three inset dials on the face, one shows what mode the watch is in, and the other two both show the time (one in 24 hour mode, and the other in UTC). It's a waste of two complications, showing the time in three places at once (four, if you have the digital windows set to show the time also). Also, if you wear a suit or otherwise wear long sleeves much of the time, your watch may not get enough sunlight to keep on working. You may have to take it off your wrist and set it under light for a few hours each day, which eliminates any advantage this watch might have in convenience over battery-powered alternatives.

pros:

-great looking

-light. compared to seiko SNA, this watch is really light.

-never need a battery.

-the crown is protected so it does not rub against your skin, like on my seiko sna which causes skin irritation.

cons:

-no light. hands are luminous though not all night long.

-The time zone is used for both date and time, i wish i could set the other timezone to paris, but still have the date local.

-The timezone setting is too easy to change so my tz is sfo but when i date mode i need to make sure it's in a different time zone.

-some features are night though i never use them: GMT time and 24 hours clocks; slide rule. the slide rule is a little difficult to rotate. The instructions could include a few pages to explain how to use it instead of letting us search the internet for instructions on a circular slide rule.

-the alarm is not very loud.

Bottom line:

great watch. i have many watches but use this one most of the time.

"Great Travel Watch" 2009-10-03

I frequently travel and wanted a watch that would allow me to iew two time zones simultaneously. This watch meets the bill with a push of a button. The watch is beautiful and I definitely recommend the titanium as it is much lighter than stainless steel. I enjoy being able to see times around the world and find this particulary helpful when I travel. There are many functions which most will never use. The other feature I like is the CD that provides step by step instructionds for setting the watch (manual is confusing).

A gift, Blues Angels Ecco Drive AT, bought to replace a prior Blues Angels model, that by the way, often needed repair for balky dials and condensation. I'll try to keep this brief. I fly. I also know a 25,000 hr RETIRED airline pilot who own's this. When he flew jets, he did not need a watch as cockpits have an array of computers. He wears this for style. I fly VFR and do not need "to the second" precision. I DO need easy access and ergonomics because my watch needs to be a useful tool. I wear a Vibralite, a G-Shock, any analog chrono with subdial, any analog with rotating bezel and obvious marker to act as a timer. I do not like 6mm wide windows with smaller numerals often hidden by watch hands that need removal of the watch to access the crown which must be pulled one tiny notch, rotated to the function then pressed in again just to access the chrono feature, and then the same for another function like the timer. Finger acrobatics to distract me in flight. I do not need a backlight to see another timezone yet does not function when in chrono mode. (read the small print in the manual first!). See where I'm going with this? If you like a conversation piece that will tell people you like airplanes and maybe fly them, sure it's a nice piece, no doubt about it. NOT recommended as a pilot's tool. There are much much better, smarter choices.

Got it in June 2004.

Very handsome watch. Titanium is the version to get.

I leave it by the window when not in use. It loses about 30 seconds after six months.

I love the many alarms.

I never had any problems with battery losing power. One time the charge state went down to about 30% and so I placed it near the window.

I opened up the watch and drain the hell out of the single button cell just to see how it charges. It was less than an afternoon. I don't remember and I'm not doing it again because it will ruin the battery.

This watch is not for rugged use, so don't play football with it. The seconds hand needs to be zero (0) adjusted when the watch is shocked (banged).

This watch is also quite complex to learn to use. I sometimes have to refer to the manual for certain adjustments. But it is much easier to adjust time than more pretty watches. The days/months/year, hours/min/seconds are all independent. In some pretty watches, to adjust the day of the month, you have to adjust the 24hour hand 30 times if you miss your day.

"A watch for everytime and everywhere" 2009-10-17

I saw and tasted this watch a few times in some shops before I bought it here at Amazon. How every time Amazon sent the packet fast and without problems.

Then if I had this watch at my home, I was very lucky: this piece is really exceptional. The big case give a good feeling and the the high-tec-looking is a good pleasure for me.

No battery evermore, always exactly time (nearly) everywhere, some good chronographic utilities, and a indestructible case and watch strap, and also waterproof to 600 ft.

I think this watch is one of these things, which I would keep at me on a lonely island; and I can advice it to everybody who likes extraordinary watches.

The GOOD: If you need dual time zone watch this is it. I do deal with India all the time and that is challenge with nearly any other watch. India is 9 1/2 hours yes it is one of the few countries that is a 30 minute offset in time zone and does not change over to DST so then thats 10 1/2 hours just try keeping track of that and things fall apart. There is hardly any watch that will handle a half hour time zone except this one (even the old skyhawk didn't). This watch does that and more including alarms in different time zones so you can set the alarm in another time zone without doing a major compute for the local time. Two alarms so keep one on the local and the second on the world time if you wish. If you deal with London you get a third time zone the UTC sub dial and you can calculate most of Europe easily from that.

The watch is big and thick and in titanium weighs nothing its nearly as light as my kids Casio

The BAD: Contrast on the digital display is pretty bad.

The back light though present is not the best.

The hands cover the digital display a few times a day you can tilt and read under the hands but forget trying to set any function at 20 past the hour

The UGLY (loses one star for this): If you are going to use the second display for a world time zone there is no way to see the local calendar. Just to see the calendar you have to pull the crown 1 stop twist to change the mode and that will give you the calendar of the world zone So to have calendar functionality for local zone you have to set the world zone as your local zone (you lose an easy way to see the world zone). Simply put this watch can work as a dual zone watch or as a calendar watch not as both.

There are 2 nice press buttons one for the light (nice idea) and the other to indicate if the watch was able to sync with the atomic radio signal, it would have been much better if pressing that button would have flashed the local calendar on the display. Citizen could have easily put the atomic signal as an icon on the display. Citizen really dropped the ball on this one I nearly returned the watch due to the loss of calendar but I had got it during a price drop to $510 (Amazon not another vendor) and that sort of let me forget the day and date. Just keep in mind if you must have calendar and world time (besides UTC London) at the same time this watch does NOT do a good job. It does a great job for each (including perpetual calendar) but not both together

So I've had this watch about a week now and I love it! The build quality is awesome and you can tell the Japanese Workmanship is still going strong.

Looks - I think the watch looks great. It is quite big on the wrist but that it looks good for today's standards. It is looks like a heavy duty watch that was given to designers to make elegant. If I had to make a car analogy, I'd say it would have the same feel as if Lexus made a heavy duty truck.

Workmanship - The quality is great. The hands align perfectly on the mark. The second hand ticks where the second hand is supposed to tick which I find annoying if it doesn't. (I've seen omegas that don't even align properly.) The minute hand also moves slightly every time the second hand ticks, the quality is definitely there.

Functions - Calendar, Timer, Chronograph, Alarm 1, Alarm 2, and of course Atomic Time syncronization. There is also a dual time zone function which is very helpful (home time zone and away time zone, you just press a few buttons and it switches them vice versa). The only problem is that if you want to see the current date, it will show the date of the away time zone. This is slightly annoying as to see the current date and time, the zones would need to be set to the same city. The calendar function however would be more helpful to real pilots (which I am not) as they will probably actually land in the away time zone.

Weight - This watch is a good weight, not too heavy, not too light. It is well balanced. This pretty much means that you should expect the non-titanium (i.e. stainless steel) version to be very heavy!

Illuminating hands - at night the illumination is pretty good. There is ample surface area of illumination making it pretty easy to read. The illumination seems to die down pretty quickly however though I haven't tested about how long it lasts. (The watch hands can illuminate briefly in the daytime when you are out in the sun and then walk into a normal lit room, I don't mind it personally.)

Sliding Rule Bezel - I like the function and I think it is really useful. If you take the time to learn this old school calculator, it is really neat and handy. It is best for multiplication and division, it doesn't do addition or subtraction.

Eco Drive - It is hard to tell how well this works, but so far so good.

Overall - I love this watch, it is rugged yet elegant. It also has an extremely impressive set of bells and whistles. The titanium looks good but also makes the watch light enough for wearing all the time without having to think about it. I give it 4.7 stars. Nearly Perfect.

I went a long time thinking about a watch and finally decided to make a decision. I had Rolex and other high end names in mind when I started and was ready to spend the $$ to get what I wanted. However, Citizen provided me with a nice package of options on this watch at a very reasonable price. I cross time zones often so the ability to switch to my local travel time while knowing the date and time at home are important to me. Having not worry about batteries is a big bonus and the automatic time setting means one less thing I need to think about.

If you are thinking about saving a few bucks by not getting the Titanium model... buck up! There is a world of weight difference between the titanium and stainless steel mode. Unfortunately I could not find one dealer in my area that carries the titanium model so I had to go on faith. Maybe you won't have to take the same leap of faith I did. If you do, I can only say I was not disappointed. I was shocked how much lighter it is.

This is the watch to get if you want the state of the art technology in a watch and at an amazing reasonable price. You can shop aound for the best deal and if you do not mind the risk ebay has a few shops offering it at half off. I buy most of my stuff from amazon but sometimes ebay has extremely low price. I did get cheated twice on ebay and always only buy from ratings >99% with a lot of sales.

Most people buy this model first of all for the atomic clock. I live in California and it works great. At first I try to connect to the atomic clock transmission "on demand". I am not sure why it did not get the signal. Then I put it next to the window of my second floor bed room. Next morning when I check it did updated by the atomic clock. (I check against the US clock on the web and also the status shown on the watch that said it successfully received signal from the radio and set the time with it)

The second most likely reason to buy this watch is for the solar power. The watch when I receive it already is fully charged (unlike most cell phones). The manual said it will run for 6 months if fully charged. To fully charge the watch from almost completely discharged takes 20 hours under the sun or 60 hours with cloudy sky. I'll have to put it under the sun once every 3 month or put it under my desk light once a week. I wear my watch under long sleeve shorts and never expose it to light.

The third reason is for the weight (titanium). Even though the watch is "Hugh" it is light, lighter than a standard Rolex. I have not tried the other versions of the same watch, but you can save $50 to $100 for other versions that are heavier. If I have a second choice it would be the black belt one which will give the watch a cooler look in color.

There are a lot of functions this watch can do and most of which I am not going to use. The watch come with a cd that has all the info you need for adjustments to the watch. That is much better than the very small print manual which I have a hard time reading. I make a copy of the cd onto my laptop. I can assure you I cannot remember how to do most of those things without referring to the documentation. I'll give you one example. The watch has a home clock and a second "world" clock which you set to a city you travel to most often. Let's say now you fly there and you want to switch the two clocks. 1. Pull the crown to position 1 (there are 2 positions). 2. Turn the crown to adjust the mode to tme or cal (there are 8 modes). 3. Push button A and B at the same time until you hear a sound. The two clocks will have been switch. 4. Turn crown back to original mode. 5. Return crown to original position. It is easy if you follow instruction but difficult to remember.

The size of the crown is big compare to other watches like the standard Rolex. It is ok if you only need to do a few things. If you try many things like me when I got it new, you break your nail. So you may want to get a tool to help you if you are planning to use the crown for more than 10 minutes. Almost all adjustments require using the crown. The chronograph functions once set you will only use the two buttons and not the crown any more. Same for the 2 alarms once it is set.

There are many more pro's for the watch but I want to say something about the con's. The led display is too small for me and even when using the light it is hard to read. If you really want to use the digital readouts a lot you have to have very good eyes. I have yet to find out what is the use of the UTC hours and minute hands?

12/16/2008 Now I have used the alarm a few times I would like to add a few comments. There are 2 alarm settings. They are all very easy to do. The alarm setting is in the digital section. Be careful about the am and pm setting. It is not by the hr and min section and is at the bottom next to on and off. Someone else said the alarm is difficult to hear but I found it is quite acceptable and laud enough for me.
